An inmate at the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center died Saturday night after suffering an apparent medical emergency, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
STPSO said the inmate was being housed in a medical observation dorm because of known medical conditions.
Shortly after 8:15 p.m. Saturday, August 22, corrections deputies observed the inmate experiencing a medical emergency and immediately began lifesaving efforts. Emergency medical personnel and staff with the company contracted to provide medical services at the jail also responded, but the inmate was pronounced dead.
The Sheriff’s Office said no foul play is suspected at this time and the death is believed to be the result of natural causes.
The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office took possession of the body and will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The inmate’s identity has not been released while authorities notify family members.
STPSO says the investigation remains ongoing.
