ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (October 16, 2026). The National Weather Service has upgraded Saturday's fire weather watch to a Red Flag Warning for St. Tammany Parish, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning as dry air and gusty winds increase the danger of rapidly spreading fires.

The warning covers 9 a.m. through 8 p.m. CDT Saturday, October 17. It includes the parish's northern, southeastern and southwestern forecast zones, placing all of St. Tammany within the warning area.

Forecasters issued the upgrade at 12:28 p.m. Friday. The earlier Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. The warning is for Saturday's expected conditions, rather than a report that a wildfire is currently burning in the parish.

The forecast calls for north winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 30 mph, and relative humidity falling as low as 30 percent. The Weather Service said a cold front expected to move through Friday would bring much drier air into the region. Existing drought conditions and plentiful dry vegetation add to the concern that a fire could ignite and grow quickly.

For residents planning outdoor work, the practical concern is preventing a small ignition from becoming a larger emergency. The Weather Service advises against outdoor burning during the warning. Its wildfire safety guidance also recommends keeping ignition sources away from dry vegetation, disposing of cigarettes safely and securing trailer chains so they do not drag and create sparks. Vehicles should not be driven over dry grass or brush.

The change from a watch to a warning is significant. A watch identifies the potential for critical fire weather. A warning calls for action because those conditions are occurring or expected soon. In this case, the specified period begins Saturday morning and continues into the evening.

The weather warning should not be confused with a separate burn ban. Residents should follow any restrictions issued by the authorities responsible for their area; the Weather Service's recommendation here is to avoid outdoor burning because of the forecast fire danger.

Residents should check the latest National Weather Service forecast before Saturday outdoor activities and follow instructions from local fire officials. The warning's timing and forecast details were verified at 2:32 p.m. CDT Friday, October 16.
