SLIDELL, La. Slidell Police Department says a weekend multi agency DWI checkpoint screened more than
1,900 vehicles and resulted in
5 DWI arrests,
2 drug arrests and
18 citations.
The checkpoint was conducted with assistance from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, Bogalusa Police Department and Covington Police Department, all of which were thanked by Slidell Police for providing additional manpower during the operation.
According to Slidell Police, one driver attempted to flee through the checkpoint and nearly struck a Slidell officer and a St. Tammany Parish deputy. Police say the driver led officers on a vehicle pursuit before abandoning the vehicle and attempting to run away on foot.
The driver was taken into custody and was determined to have been impaired while driving, according to police.
In a separate incident, police say an intoxicated suspect carjacked a woman at a nearby gas station. Officers working the checkpoint assisted in locating the suspect and taking him into custody.
Police say that suspect was arrested for carjacking and fourth offense DWI.
Slidell Police described the operation as one of its most successful DWI checkpoints to date and credited the participating agencies for helping make the operation a success.
