ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. Parish President Mike Cooper says he is recovering at home after suffering what he described as a mild stroke. On his doctors’ advice, he will reduce his schedule over the next several weeks while focusing on his recovery.
In a public health update Monday, Cooper said a stress test several weeks ago led to a procedure Tuesday, September 8, to address a blockage in a major artery of his heart. A stent was successfully placed, and he had planned to recover at home before returning to work Monday.
Those plans changed when he suffered the stroke, which Cooper said left him with lingering numbness in his left hand and arm. After additional testing and an overnight hospital stay, he was discharged Friday evening, September 11, and has been resting at home.
Cooper said his time in the office, participation in meetings and attendance at official events will be limited during his recovery. He emphasized that St. Tammany Parish Government’s work continues, expressing confidence in his leadership team, the Parish Council and parish employees to maintain services for residents.
He thanked the medical professionals who cared for him and credited Catherine with encouraging him to undergo the initial stress test. Cooper also thanked residents for their prayers, encouragement and understanding. “I look forward to getting back to my normal pace soon,” he wrote.
