APR•St TAMMANY: Why We Exist, What We’ve Accomplished, and Where We’re Going
When APR•St TAMMANY launched, the goal wasn’t to become the biggest news page in St. Tammany Parish.
The goal was much simpler.
Give the community a place where information comes before opinions, documentation comes before assumptions, and local news is treated as something worth taking seriously.
APR stands for Accurate Parish Reporting, and that name guides every decision we make.
Built for St. Tammany Parish
Large media organizations cover major stories. We focus on the stories that affect people where they actually live.
That means reporting on:
* Breaking news
* Traffic crashes
* Road closures
* Severe weather
* Flooding
* Public safety
* Community events
* Schools
* Local government
* Elections
* Public meetings
* Public records
* Infrastructure projects
* Businesses
* Community concerns
Our goal has always been to keep residents informed about what is happening across every corner of St. Tammany Parish—not just when something makes statewide headlines.
More Than Breaking News
One of the biggest misconceptions about APR is that we only report on one topic.
The reality is exactly the opposite.
Over the past several months we have published hundreds of stories covering weather emergencies, tropical systems, flooding, road closures, tax notices, sheriff’s office announcements, school news, community events, public safety alerts, elections, infrastructure projects, public meetings, arrests reported by law enforcement agencies, local businesses, and countless other topics affecting residents throughout the parish.
We’ve reported on:
* Tropical weather and hurricane threats
* National Weather Service updates
* River flooding
* Road closures
* Public safety emergencies
* Animal shelter overcrowding
* Property tax deadlines
* Sheriff’s Office announcements
* Community events
* Election information
* Public meetings
* Local development projects
* Infrastructure concerns
* Government accountability
* Public records
Every day is different.
Some days we’re tracking storms.
Other days we’re sitting through hours of public meetings.
Sometimes we’re reviewing hundreds of pages of public records.
Sometimes we’re simply helping residents know which roads are flooded before they leave home.
That is what local journalism looks like.
Public Records Matter
One area that has received significant attention is our public records reporting.
Government records belong to the public.
Residents have a right to know how public agencies operate, how public money is spent, and how decisions affecting their communities are made.
APR has spent countless hours requesting, reviewing, organizing, and publishing information obtained through Louisiana’s Public Records Law.
That work often involves reading hundreds—or even thousands—of pages of documents before a single article is ever written.
Whenever possible, we encourage readers to review the same documents themselves rather than simply taking our word for it.
Accuracy Comes First
Information changes.
Developing stories evolve.
Additional documents become available.
Witnesses come forward.
Agencies release new statements.
Unlike rumors shared on social media, responsible reporting requires information to be continually reviewed.
APR regularly revisits developing stories to verify new facts, update information, and make corrections whenever necessary.
Accuracy isn’t achieved by never making updates.
Accuracy is achieved by continuing to verify information even after a story has been published.
Community First
APR has never claimed to know everything.
Some of our biggest stories started because someone in the community decided to speak up.
Residents have submitted:
* Photos
* Videos
* Documents
* Emails
* Audio recordings
* Public records
* Meeting recordings
* Weather reports
* Road closures
* Community concerns
Every submission is reviewed before publication whenever possible.
Not every tip becomes a story.
But every legitimate submission helps paint a more complete picture of what is happening throughout the parish.
Independent by Design
APR is an independent local news organization.
We are not operated by any government agency.
We are not affiliated with any police department.
We are not owned by a media corporation.
Our responsibility is to the residents of St. Tammany Parish.
That independence allows us to report on a wide variety of topics without limiting coverage to one agency, one town, or one issue. (APR•St TAMMANY)
Building Something Bigger
What started as a local Facebook page has grown into something much larger.
Today APR includes:
* A dedicated news website
* Live weather information
* Community submission tools
* Email updates
* Multiple social media platforms
* Dedicated town and community pages
* Original reporting
* Public records reporting
* Video coverage
* Community alerts
We’re continuing to build new features, improve the website, expand coverage, and make it easier for residents to stay informed.
An Android app is also in development, with additional expansion planned for the future.
Thank You
None of this would be possible without the people who read our stories, share our posts, send tips, submit documents, report road closures, alert us to weather conditions, and support independent local journalism.
Every share helps someone stay informed.
Every submitted document helps uncover another piece of the story.
Every reader helps strengthen local reporting.
APR•St TAMMANY was built for this community.
We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about where we’re headed next.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
