The St. Tammany Parish School Board has called a special meeting for Monday, October 5, to consider placing Steve Alfonso in charge of the school system as interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2026 to 2027 school year.

The meeting follows the retirement of Superintendent Frank Jabbia, who announced his departure after more than 32 years with St. Tammany Parish Public Schools. Jabbia had served as superintendent since October 2020.

According to the special meeting agenda posted October 1, board members are scheduled to discuss and vote on Alfonso’s selection along with the salary, supplemental compensation and other benefits associated with the superintendent position.

Alfonso currently serves as Associate Superintendent of Administration and Human Resources for St. Tammany Parish Public Schools.

Louisiana law allows a local school board, by majority vote of its membership, to appoint an interim superintendent following the death, resignation or termination of a superintendent or when a superintendent is placed on paid administrative leave. State law gives an interim superintendent the same authority as the superintendent while serving in that position.

The special meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, October 5, at the C.J. Schoen Administrative Complex, 321 N. Theard Street in Covington.

The posted agenda also includes a three minute public comment period following the agenda item.

The School Board’s own meeting information states that special meetings may be called at times designated by the board president and that actions taken during those meetings are binding.

If approved Monday night, Alfonso would take over leadership of the St. Tammany Parish Public School System on an interim basis while the board determines its longer term direction for the superintendent position.
