ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — A 14-year-old student was arrested Friday following an altercation inside the cafeteria of a St. Tammany Parish high school, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
STPSO said a school resource officer was alerted to the fight around 11 a.m. While attempting to stop it, the deputy was allegedly elbowed in the face and four teachers were reportedly kicked or struck.
One teacher sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Deputies identified the 14-year-old boy as the alleged aggressor. He was taken into custody and booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center.
STPSO listed felony and misdemeanor charges involving resisting an officer with force or violence, disturbing the peace or simple assault, battery of a teacher resulting in an injury requiring medical treatment, and additional battery counts involving school personnel.
The school was temporarily placed on lockdown during the incident. The lockdown was lifted after the situation was brought under control, and STPSO said there is no ongoing threat to students or staff.
The Sheriff’s Office did not publicly identify the student or the school.
The charges are allegations. The juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
